So my aunt drives this thing around as a daily driver, this beast has 170,000 miles on it and she's started complaining the transmission is slipping. So my uncle drives it and agrees it slips a little bit. But I'm thinking it's on of the coldest winters in many years, this truck is cold, it's simply unhappy, give it a transmission flush and a tune-up and see how the thing does, and more importantly, see how it does when it warms up outside, I bet anything, that "hesitation" they are describing in the transmission, will go away. It's possible it won't, but it's worth it to wait it out.

So whenever they come to me about car advice, I keep trying to remind them of these facts. But on the other hand it does have 170,000 on it and something catastrophic could be waiting to happen, bringing their trade in value to almost nothing. So in true automatch fashion I'm also helping them entertain possible alternatives. Mostly because I don't want to be responsible for them keeping a timebomb (if that's what it turns out to be).

At the end of the day I know my aunt, and she gets what she wants, so anything I say is simply taken into consideration, but ultimately and unfortunately, new car decisions are up to her and not to my more level-headed uncle, I can tell he values my input on such matters. But in the back of my mind, when i give him such advice I always remember my aunt will have the last word.

So while taking the Expedition into the dealer to have it looked at and likely get the fluids changed, they checked out an '11 Explorer with 70k miles, my driving its platform cousin, the Taurus, I was quick to sing its praises, haha.

TLDR? Well, you'll get the gist if you read the first and last paragraph and if you invested that kind of time, you might as well read the middle two. HA!

If she wants something as big as the Expedition, the new Tahoe might fit the bill. Do they need 4WD?

My aunt will not settle for anything less than 4WD/AWD. Yowen's Aunt gets what yowen's aunt wants. Lol.

I think they are however willing to downsize, to something like an Explorer. They are not looking to buy new

I'd say just get something with real 4WD if she needs it cause most crossovers except Audi are FWD-based AWD and they're really not much better than FWD in snow and such. Try going up a hill in snowy conditions and you'll see what I mean.

I disagree. My Ford 500 was considerably squirellier than my Taurus SHO with AWD when it comes to icy and snowy conditions.

Also just because my aunt wants something doesn't mean she actually needs it. She WANTS AWD/4WD, just because... well... She has decided it will be so.

And what a bummer that is, I guess the rumblings of an all new Navigator/Expedition were untrue.

Well, if she doesn't need it then I guess she should just stick to an AWD crossover for "peace of mind."

There are tons out there, but I really don't like most crossovers... so I'm going to go biased and recommend the only crossover I liked driving, Subaru Forester.

I'm sure a new one is in the works. This is a lick of paint / hope for suckers stopgap.

The Focus, Fiesta, Fusion, F150, and Mustang all seem to show that Ford is got it goin' on. I expect their full lineup to be world class shortly.

Yeah, I would hope so. Even so, the new Navi's and Expeditions are glorious places to be inside of, in my opinion, haha.

Haha, they are very much on a diet of American cars only. Pretty much it is wait and say what her ruling is, lol. I really secretly hope my uncle manages to hold on to that Expedition, I want to see how long that thing will last them! Haha. I've grown rather fond of that beast. Comfortable as hell.
